Mammoth Lakes is a breathtaking display of natural wonders, from the snow-covered slopes of Mammoth Mountain to the sheer cliffs of Half Dome Rock in Yosemite National Park. But most folks know this beloved California region for its world-class ski and snowboard territory – no small feat for most, but relatively easy for a region that enjoys 400-plus inches of snow and close to 300 days of alpine sunshine each year. We can’t imagine a better location for a California ski resort and it’s clear that the properties on our list of Top 10 Mammoth Lakes Ski resorts agree. This scenic region has inspired more than its share of visitors – including famed American photographer, Ansel Adams – and we think it’s safe to assume you’ll find a little inspiration of your own when you stay at any one of the equally stunning properties featured below!

Not only does the Mammoth Lakes resort in our No. 5 spot overlook one of the many California lakes, its delectable culinary offerings give you further incentive (as if you need any) to ski the Mammoth Mountain slopes all day, every day. Your food and fun-fueled Mammoth Lakes vacation begins at Tamarack Lodge!

Mammoth Lodging – Tamarack Lodge’s management company – likes to say that nothing but a down comforter and a door comes between you and the Mammoth Lakes slopes. While we admit it’s a big of an exaggeration, we think you’ll forgive them for bragging once you lay eyes – and skis – on the pristine powder of the nearby Mammoth Mountain slopes. But don’t hit the slopes without taking us – or rather, Tamarack Lodge – up on the bountiful menu offerings we promised. The lodge’s Lakefront Restaurant serves up to-die-for dishes like smoked trout and pan-seared veal tenderloin. We recommend saving room for one of this Mammoth Lake eatery’s divine desserts, including wild blueberry tarts! Those looking for a year-round Mammoth Lakes mountain experience won’t be disappointed; Tamarack Lodge shines in every season. Education blends seamlessly with recreation in most of Tamarack Lodge’s daily offerings, from expert fly fishing and mountain biking instruction to laidback lodge staples like storytelling and s’mores around the campfire.

Mammoth Lakes is primarily known as one of America’s top-rated ski towns, but the same factors that make it a delight to ski – fresh powder, crisp mountain air and breathtaking California scenery – also make it perfectly suited for romantic weekends, especially when you journey to the resort in our No. 7 spot, the Mammoth Creek Hotel.

American photographer Ansel Adams was so inspired by this California mountain town that many of its peaks, valleys and pine forests are showcased throughout his work. But even a camera-wielding genius like Adams can’t do justice to what it’s like to actually experience Mammoth Mountain. For that, we recommend our No. 8 pick, Summit Condominiums.

Don’t worry, we still plan to give Summit’s spacious condos their dues. But first, we think a proper introduction to Mammoth Lakes is in order – in the form of a half-day trip to the Ansel Adams Gallery, that is. His black and white photographs are stunning, to be sure, but we didn’t fully appreciate them until we stepped outside the gallery’s doors and straight into a living version of his work. And we weren’t the only ones; someone at Summit was so impressed with Adams that an entire building at this Mammoth Lake ski resort bears his name! We may have moved on from Adams and into the accommodations, but we don’t know how we’re going to do justice to Summit’s Mammoth Lake condo rentals. It’s probably best to just stick to the facts. Like the fact that Summit condos come in an incredible variety of shapes and sizes, from pet-friendly one-bedroom lofts to sprawling three bedrooms at the foot of Eagle Lodge lifts.

Highlights

Mammoth Mountain offers hiking, biking and more in the Ansel Adams Wilderness in summer months.

Getting there

From Los Angeles, take State Route 14 north from Los Angeles to U.S. 395. Take U.S. 395 north to Bishop. Continue north on U.S. 395 to Hwy. 203. Take Hwy. 203 west to Mammoth. Mammoth Mountain is about 323 miles from Los Angeles.

Fun facts

Summit Condominiums offers numerous guest services such as the Sweetheart Special and Children's Package, restaurant recommendations and ski equipment rental vouchers.

Looking for an authentic Austrian experience without the expense of a lengthy across-the-pond flight? “Willkommen” to Austria Hof Lodge, the Mammoth Lake resort in our No. 9 spot. The Austria Hof may be inspired by the motherland, but you can forgo the traditional leiderhosen in favor of ski pants – this California mountain lodge is all about the slopes!

There’s a reason – or three, depending who you ask – that Austria Hof Lodge sells more Mammoth Mountain ski packages than their competition. It only makes sense given the lodge’s location a mere 200 yards from the Village gondola and Mammoth slopes. It definitely doesn’t hurt that the lodge offers some of California’s most luxurious ski accommodations, with granite countertops, premium down bedding and jetted tubs in most of its three diamond hotel rooms. And the lodge’s ability to offer complete and convenient ski packages at the best prices surely has something to do with it. But if you ask us, it’s Austria Hof Lodge’s dizzying array of après-ski activities that puts them out of reach of other Mammoth Lakes lodges. Like a lounge that serves up signature martinis and specialty coffees, an outdoor Jacuzzi with panoramic views of the Mammoth slopes and an endless list of nightlife options scattered about town, to name a few. We were especially impressed by the hot spiced wines and savory German specialties (think schnitzel, spaetzle and sauerkraut) offered up in the Austria Hof Restaurant – Mammoth’s only authentic German restaurant!

Getting there

Take Hwy. 203 to the Mammoth Lakes exit to Main Street. Continue up Main Street through three stoplights. Turn right at the third stoplight onto Canyon Boulevard. Follow Canyon Boulevard one mile to the Austria Hof Lodge, located at the top of the road on the right and next to Mammoth Mountain Ski Area at Canyon Lodge.

Fun facts

During the summer months, the Mammoth ski slopes transform into the Mammoth Mountain Bike Park with numerous trails converging right outside Austria Hof Lodge’s front doors.

Related Onsite Offerings

Mammoth Lakes condos, conveniently located near the slopes and the village, are also available through the Austria Hof Lodge.

Rated #1 ski resort in North America in 2004 by TransWorld Magazine, the more than 3,500 skiable acres and 3,100 vertical feet prove that ranking tried and true.
