The first Europeans arrived in the Mount Shasta area around 1820 when trappers were searching for fur-bearing animals. Silver and gold brought miners to the area around 1851, and a new railroad system from Strawberry Valley in 1887 laid the way for growth in the timber industry. Today, outdoor lovers - from extreme sports enthusiasts to family vacationers and retirees - are enjoying the vast recreational opportunities the region has to offer. Travelers have easy access to camping, hiking, biking, golfing, fishing, skiing and so much more. You may have to extend your getaway in order to fit everything in!
