Modern luxury and traditional hospitality blend seamlessly at the historic boutique hotel in our No. 2 spot. Tucked into the heart of Victoria’s Belleville Park with views of the inner harbour, Gatsby Mansion Inn lets you relive a bygone era on your Victoria vacation!

Glittering chandeliers, stained glass windows and rich wood paneling usher you into this traditional Victorian treasure – or trio of treasures, to be precise. This historic boutique hotel is comprised of three uniquely-styled buildings. Built in 1872, the Middle House – actually more of cottage – is original to the property. And the inn’s namesake – the Gatsby Mansion – is a Queen Anne-style Victorian home with an impressive white façade and elegant gardens. But the crown jewel of this Victoria B&B is the Judges House, an architectural masterpiece circa 1877. With its Italianate style and hand-frescoed ceilings, it’s no wonder the Judges House has been chosen to entertain some of British Columbia’s most distinguished names, including prime ministers! Inside, you’ll find authentic Victorian treasures like canopy beds, wingback armchairs, floral prints and chaise lounges. And an afternoon high tea and fine dining at the Gatsby Mansion Restaurant preserve the flavors of a bygone era.

Getting there

The Gatsby Mansion Inn is directly across the street from U.S. Ferries and five minutes from Helijet, Harbour and Kenmore Air. If you drive or fly into Vancouver, Seattle or Port Angeles you can get to Victoria quickly by using seaplanes, passenger and car ferries or the Helijet. Major airlines like Air Canada, West Jet and Alaska/ Horizon have direct flights to Victoria International Airport where there is an airport shuttle that will bring you directly to the doors.

Fun facts

William J. Pendray came to Victoria in 1875 to invest the profits he made from the gold rush. His family lived in the Middle House while the mansion was built.

We don’t know who Abigail is, but we can assume she has wonderful taste. At least if her hotel is any indication. With 23 stylish rooms, gourmet breakfasts and spa services near Victoria’s Inner Harbour, it’s part bed and breakfast, part boutique hotel and all Old World Victoria charm.

It used to be a luxury apartment building back in 1930. What this means to you is a truly unique experience - everywhere you look there’s something amazing. That includes each room - each one its own masterpiece of design and ambiance.- and the daily gourmet breakfast served indoors or out. Until now, a Victoria bed and breakfast vacation might have been complete with all of this. Its spaces have been variously described as Georgian-style, French Country, Italian Renaissance, Victorian and English Country. Whatever it is, it’s definitely style - different in each room, surrounded by modern elegance. It’s a stunningly beautiful Victoria bed and breakfast getaway.

The emphasis is on romance, and you can choose the Victoria romantic getaway that's just your style. There’s an Italian Suite Venetian with a fireplace and a double Jacuzzi tub, a spacious room with clawfoot tub designed after a Florentine palazzo, Fireplace Rooms with private balconies, stunning Verandah rooms with bright, bold colors, and a six-room Arts and Crafts style addition that was once the carriage house. The common denominator here is that each one will take your breath away with the antiques, art and one-of-a-kind furnishings and design. That’s not to mention the Conservatory, where gourmet breakfast is served each morning. Here the emphasis is on natural light, and the perfect start to each day of your Victoria luxury vacation.

This massive-looking historic Victoria hotel has always been conveniently located near many of the Inner Harbour ferry stops. When we say “always,” we’re not kidding - this is the third-oldest hotel in Victoria, opened in 1911 and operated continuously as a hotel except briefly during WWII.

Which means that the staff here knows a thing or two about hospitality, and that goes along with truly historic hotel suites. The design here is the same as it was nearly a century ago, and each room faces outside with views of Beacon Hill Park courtesy of large windows and open balconies on each floor. The rates here are pretty attractive, too - suites start at just $75 CDN. If a Victoria hotel suite isn’t quite your style, you can also choose the cottage vacation rental with two bedrooms, four-piece bath, fully-equipped kitchen and private parking. Or - in a living example of history repeating itself - there’s the Heritage House, built in 1908 and once known as the JBI Annex. It’s now back in the fold and offers one-bedroom suites and studios that are great for couples and singles.

Getting there

The James Bay Inn is within walking distance to the Victoria Star, the Coho Ferry and the Seattle Clipper, plus major international bus terminals and Victoria local transit.

Fun facts
