Hidden Valley may be known for the delicious line of salad dressings that share its name, but we think this Pennsylvania town has so much more to offer than flavorful lettuce toppings – starting with our No. 6 spot, Four Seasons Lodges.

If it’s true that Hidden Valley Resort is a four-season Pennsylvania playground, we think it’s only fitting for the Four Seasons Lodges to serve as the center of the action on your Pennsylvania family vacation. In fact, there’s so much adventure to be had here in the Laurel Highlands, we really shouldn’t even bother to tell you about these affordable, family-sized Pennsylvania lodge rooms. There’s too much to be said about all the fishing, mountain biking, golfing and pampering you’ll be doing at this Southern Allegheny resort! Think it’s impossible to carve, glide and hang ten when the weather warms up? We would have agreed – if we hadn’t been introduced to the exciting sport of mountain boarding, courtesy of Hidden Valley Sport Shop. Like a skateboard but built specifically to handle the Highlands’ topsy-turvy mountain terrain, these four wheel wonders are just one way to cruise the Pennsylvania countryside. But perhaps you’d feel a bit better if you had all four feet planted firmly on the Pennsylvania soil. No, that’s not a typo – hitch a ride on one of Hidden Valley Stables’ four-legged friends for guided tours through Hidden Valley’s winding trails!

Highlights

The Hidden Valley Golf Club is a spectacular 18-hole championship course with narrow tree-lined fairways nestled among native Mountain Laurel. Let the professionals at Hidden Valley plan your Pennsylvania golf vacation to a tee!

Our No. 6 spot isn’t much of a resort at all. But don’t misunderstand; that’s only because it’s best described as a historic Pennsylvania inn and tavern with a rich and storied past. Famous for its heritage and hospitality, the Golden Eagle Inn is our No. 5 pick and your point of departure on your historic Pennsylvania vacation!

We can’t imagine a better place to begin your tour than in a historic tavern that once provided food and shelter to George Washington’s troops. That’s right, the Golden Eagle Inn bears more than a patriotic name; this Pennsylvania inn played an instrumental role in the famed Whiskey Rebellion! But there’s even more U.S. history to be relived on your Pennsylvania vacation, especially with the Golden Eagle Inn’s fantastic location in downtown Bedford. Outside, you’ll be a few old-fashioned footsteps away from historic Bedford’s theaters, shops and museums. And inside, antique furnishings, delicate floral wallpapers and exquisite chandeliers complete your historic journey. But we first encountered this Southern Allegheny inn on a tour of another kind – specifically, a time-traveling exploration of culinary proportions. Inside the Golden Eagle’s elegant dining rooms, colonial flavors and local foods blend for scrumptious dishes like buttery croissants filled with fluffy scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, pan-seared duck breast on a bed of fresh field greens and old-fashioned buttermilk pie.

Highlights

Original hardwood floors, high ceilings, fireplaces and more were all painstakingly preserved within the Golden Eagle Inn’s walls.

Getting there

From I-70 or I-76, exit at Bedford and turn right. Travel south on U.S. 220 for approximately two miles to the second traffic light. Turn right and proceed to the Golden Eagle Inn on your right. From I-99 South, take the bypass and turn at the Bedford exit. The inn will be on your left before you reach the second traffic light.

Fun facts

In the late 1700s, Dr. John Anderson built the first brick building in Bedford, known as Anderson's Mansion, and opened the Golden Eagle Tavern on the home’s first floor.

With only five guest rooms to its name, our No. 8 spot certainly offers a more intimate experience on your Pennsylvania mountain vacation. Some might call the Inn at Solvang’s minute proportions a bit stuffy, but we think a secluded location and plenty of privacy are necessary for more amorous occasions.

From floral carpets to chintz curtains and coverlets, something – we’ll call it romance – is blossoming in the Inn at Solvang’s intimate Heart and Hand room. Down the hall, the Garden Room’s whirlpool tub for two is brimming with heavenly-scented bubbles. And just a staircase away, a grand piano and harpsichord lend the ambiance of a bygone era to this colonial home. Call us crazy, but we think this gracious Pennsylvania inn might be just the ticket to reconnecting on your Pennsylvania mountains romantic getaway! If you ask us, the best part of the Inn at Solvang’s secluded location is that it only seems worlds away. Really, this Pennsylvania inn is mere minutes from Huntingdon, PA, and just a few hours from Washington, DC. Here, you can spend your days strolling hand-in-hand through the Pennsylvania countryside, fishing the inn’s private trout stream with that special someone by your side or heating things up with a friendly round of golf on Standing Stone’s course.

Highlights

The entire Inn at Solvang was completely renovated using vibrant colors, murals, trompe l’oeil and stenciling to bring new life to its rooms.

Getting there

The Inn at Solvang is located one hour south of Interstate 80 through State College on route 26 south or one hour north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76) using Route 522 north, Route 22 west and Route 26 north. The Inn is situated four miles north of Huntingdon on Route 26. Look for signs on the east side of the road. University Park Airport is just 45 minutes north.

Fun facts

The Inn at Solvang was originally designed and built by Huntingdon attorney C. Jewett Henry and his wife, Phyllis.

Stop what you’re doing and listen up! You NEED a vacation. You need some rest and relaxation. You work too hard, everyone says so. But where to go? You don’t want to spend a fortune, obviously, but you also want to go somewhere you feel like you’re spoiling yourself. Wait! What about The Bushkill Inn & Conference Center? What makes that place so special, you ask?

As The Bushkill Inn & Conference Center’s website so bluntly states, “Not all Pocono Resorts are created equally”. Assuming they’re referring to their superiority over the competition, they back it up through their location, hospitality, and luxury amenities. Taking its name from the adjacent Bushkill falls (also known as “The Niagara of Pennsylvania”), The Bushkill Inn is known for its pristine surroundings. It has 160 acres to its own in the beautiful Pocono Mountains, and uses that space to great effect. 103 private rooms, suites and cabins dot the landscape, each lovingly decorated and furnished. It’s the perfect place for family, or if you just need some “you” time. So, what do you say? Convinced? Of course you are.

Total area

The resort has 160 acres to itself.

When we first found the Pennsylvania bed and breakfast in our No. 10 spot, we were convinced we’d found an inn suffering from a serious identity crisis. After further inquisition, we learned that the Quill Haven Country Inn’s unique blend of old world charm tempered with modern luxury was precisely the effect the innkeepers intended!

As extensive travelers, Quill Haven Country Inn’s proprietors loved the unique charms and gracious hospitality they were treated to during their stays at bed and breakfasts across the country. But time after time, they came to the same conclusion: something was missing. Rather than submit themselves to the same sub-par experiences year after year, they decided to open a Somerset inn that paired all the charisma of a bed and breakfast with the modern comforts associated with full-service Pennsylvania hotels. Thus, our No. 9 spot was born, making way for a whole new era of service and luxury on your Pennsylvania mountain vacation! In keeping with the innkeeper’s lofty dreams, everything the eye beholds at this Pennsylvania bed and breakfast has either been restored to its former glory or replaced with even more exceptional modern-day luxuries. You’ll still enjoy authentic inn details like hand-crocheted doilies, stained glass lamps and period furnishings, but we think you’ll be equally inspired by modern luxuries like updated baths and a spacious outdoor hot tub!

Highlights

All of the Quill Haven Country Inn’s rooms have private baths with showers, air conditioning, ceiling fans, color cable television with premium channels, VCR and DVD players, wireless Internet and heated mattress pads.

Our No. 4 spot may be making its first appearance on our coveted Top 10 list, but it wasn’t long ago that this Pennsylvania resort made a debut of another kind. So maybe we did give it away a little bit, but it’s not like we told you about Seven Springs’ not one, but three spectacular Pennsylvania shooting clay courses that have played host to prestigious tournaments and events since their debut in the fall of 2007.
