The course was originally owned by five area golfers as a private 9-hole club more than 75 years ago, but was purchased by the state in the mid 1960s. This land was first inhabited by immigrant settlers in 1748 when a fort and mission were established. The town was a strategic location during the War of 1812. Ogdensburg was attacked in 1813 and suffered severe casualties. City government was adopted in 1868 when the village was known as "The Maple City." A statue was built in town of prominent Civil War hero Brevet Major General Newton Martin Curtis.
