When the Riviera opened in 1955, it changed the face of the Strip. Not only was it the first high-rise (nine stories), but it also broke from the city's predominant dude-ranch architecture. Because it has never had a themed appearance, the Riviera has been popular with filmmakers shooting on location in Las Vegas. The 1961 classic "Oceans 11" was shot here, as was Martin Scorsese's 1994 "Casino," a dark look at the Vegas of the 1970s and '80s.
