Briar Patch Inn has a unique history that dates back to the late 1800s. In 1876, the first settlers discovered the area beside Oak Creek, which was full of fruit trees, vegetables, and German trout from the creek. It was a little oasis between the deserts of the red rock mountains and Oak Creek Canyon. It wasn't until the 1930's that a German carpenter built a home in the area, and ten years later created the first cottage, the Bluejay. Today, the cottage still exists with its original hand-hewn wooden door latches.
