Summer. The time of year when the weather is hot, the kids are home, and vacations are planned and taken. Many people will flock to the coasts, to crowded ocean beaches and even more crowded theme parks. You and your family could join them, certainly...OR you could go somewhere off the beaten path, somewhere that has a long history of hosting relaxing and unforgettable summer experiences. We speak, of course, of South Haven on Lake Michigan.
South Haven harbors pristine beaches that rival even its more well-known counterparts from California and Florida. The sparkling waters of Lake Michigan make for fantastic swimming, boating, fishing, and (believe it or not) even surfing! While those activities are available to you every day, if you happen to be in town for the fourth of July make sure you attend South Haven’s “Light Up The Lake” fireworks show, a dazzling display of colorful explosions that will make your family ooh and aah
South Haven features dozens of unique lodging options, from quaint lakeside cottages to an Inn based in an old train car. Whether you have a family in tow or a romantic partner looking for a quiet getaway, it won’t be hard to find the perfect place for you. Simply go to South Haven’s website and see for yourself!
Once you’re settled in, you’ll want to explore at your leisure. Besides the always-popular beaches, South Haven also features quaint boutiques, gorgeous golf courses, and The Harbor walk, on which you’ll see parks, museums, shipyards and a drawbridge until you reach the end of your scenic stroll at the South Pierhead Lighthouse. Just outside of town you’ll find the beautiful Kal-Haven trail, the Van Buren State Park Dunes, and plenty of award-winning wineries and stunning inland lakes. And that’s just the beginning!
Summer is the perfect time to visit South Haven for a plethora of reasons, not the least of which is the huge amount of events held in the town. Start off your summer right with the town's annual Harborfest from June 16-19. This family-friendly event has it all – free live entertainment, a beer garden, food vendors, a craft fair, pancake breakfasts, special activities for kids, and, to top it all off, a wooden boat show. We’ve already discussed the fourth of July, but if you can’t come for Independence Day, make sure you bring your family for the National Blueberry Festival from August 11-14! South Haven is popularly known as the “Blueberry Capital of the World,” and would love to show you why.
Testimonials abound, but perhaps the most telling one comes from Florida resident Gabe Seghi. Gabe says: "I just got back home to Florida after a great summer. For sure the highlight of our trip was the week our family spent in South Haven. We were pleasantly surprised to find many things that were conveniently located-horseback riding, bike trails, art classes at the Art Center, playgrounds, beaches, and more. We had one of the best family vacations that we have ever taken!" And there you have it. South Haven offers unparalleled variety, relaxation, and fun. Get there this summer!
