There’s only way to sum up the sea salt-tinged air, rocky cliffs and vast ocean waters that surround our No. 8 spot: quintessential coastal Maine. From its shuttered Colonial Revival exterior to the charming interiors of its seaside cottages, Newagen Seaside Inn is the definition of New England coastal chic.

Much of the credit for Newagen Seaside Inn’s breathtaking accommodations undoubtedly goes to its prime location. Not only does this quaint Maine inn boast a Boothbay Harbor address, it’s also perched on the very tip of scenic Southport Island. But don’t think for a minute that we’d forget to give Newagen’s innkeepers their dues. The scenery outside may come courtesy of Mother Nature, but Newagen Seaside Inn’s immaculate guestrooms and cottages didn’t decorate themselves! Hardwood floors, hand-stitched quilts and walls awash in coastal-inspired colors blend for a calming effect in these well-appointed Maine accommodations. If Newagen Seaside Inn’s sunny interiors aren’t enough to motivate you, we think a breakfast with a view is just what the doctor – er, innkeeper – ordered. Specialty dishes like blueberry French toast and chocolate chip pancakes are a delightful addition to breakfast staples like freshly-prepared pastries, juice and eggs. And the spectacular Atlantic Ocean views framed by the dining room’s expansive windows make every meal as scenic as it is delicious!

Highlights

Newagen Seaside Inn is the ideal location for your Maine destination wedding. This coastal Maine inn boasts 20 acres of oceanfront property for spectacular outdoor ceremonies, receptions and more!

Fun facts

In 1943, the original Newagen Seaside Inn burned down, but was rebuilt within three months and has warmly welcomed guests to the coast of Maine for the past 65 years.

One Dock’s signature cocktails and Kennebunk River views accompany whichever dining experience you choose!

By definition, an admiral boasts the highest ranking among his or her peers, and we can’t imagine a more fitting description of our No. 19 pick, Admiral’s Inn Resort. This Ogunquit original is a commanding presence on Maine’s coast and an admirable destination for your coastal Maine vacation!

While this coastal Maine inn is already decorated in authentic New England style, we’d like to pin a few more stars – four, to be precise – to its metaphorical chest. Admiral Inn Resort’s all-new amenities, including two heated pools and two hot tubs, could easily take all four. The extensive treatment menu – Swedish and deep tissue massages, hydrating facials and aromatherapy cocoons, to name a few – offered by its day spa, Body Mechanix, could easily merit the addition of even more stars. But we’d rather save them all for the inn’s crowning glory: it’s designation as Ogunquit’s only true full-service resort and inn! While it certainly wouldn’t be as prestigious, perhaps a three-star salute would be more fitting for this coastal Maine accommodation. Not that the Admiral’s Inn isn’t deserving of a full four stars; it’s just that this modest inn is actually three separate properties in one central Ogunquit location! There’s the original inn, with its traditional bed and breakfast-style rooms. There’s the White Rose Inn, acquired in 2008 and added to the Admiral Inn’s selections. And the inn’s most recent addition: a stunning coastal Maine hotel with spacious rooms and access to all the Admiral’s resort-style amenities!

Highlights

You’ll find plenty to fill your days in Ogunquit, including shopping and dining in the Ogunquit Village Center, sunbathing on Ogunquit Beach and the quaint fishing community of nearby Perkins Cove

Originally called the Playhouse Inn, followed by the Post Road Inn, the Admiral's Inn is Ogunquit's oldest bed and breakfast and has been operating as an inn for nearly 50 years!

Its name may hint at blue-hued spruce and prickly pine needles, but our No. 14 pick actually sits high atop a peninsula that stretches out into the Atlantic Ocean’s watery expanses. We hope you’re ready for a change of scenery on your coastal Maine vacation, because that’s precisely what awaits you at the Spruce Point Inn!

Here at the Spruce Point Inn, the smoggy cityscape that once served as your backyard has been replaced with coastal Maine’s craggy cliffs, sparkling waters and dense forests. Your nosy neighbors have been transformed into burly fisherman hauling in their catches and spiny sea critters turned to-die-for dinners when smothered with butter. And in place of your everyday soundtrack of honking cars, ringing cell phones and overbearing bosses, you’ll find the sweet melodies of birdsong and the gentle lapping of Boothbay Harbor’s waves. Chances are you’re looking for more than a change of scenery on your coastal Maine vacation, but Spruce Point Inn is our recommended destination for any reason and in every season. Family vacations could use a little sprucing up in our opinion, and there’s nothing like a little New England flair and a gentle sea breeze to put that spring back in the step of kids and parents alike!

Highlights

The Spruce Point Inn’s fun-filled summer children’s program, The Lighthouse Camp, is the perfect supplement to coastal Maine family vacations.

Related Onsite Offerings

Speaking of walking, you won’t have to go far – you’ll find a fitness room, day spa, gourmet dining and more on the Spruce Point Inn’s picturesque grounds.

You’ll find plenty of admirable choices on our Top Coastal Maine Inn and Bed and Breakfasts list, but for a true New England experience at the water’s edge, the aptly-named Inn at Ocean’s Edge is our hands-down selection!

For once, we don’t even care if you doubt our judgment – that would only mean more room for us at this delightful Maine inn, after all. In fact, we’ve got half a mind to forsake this entire list in favor of time better spent lounging in the sparkling infinity-edge pool, strolling the vast blooming gardens or indulging in a second helping at the Inn at Ocean’s Edge’s award-winning restaurant. But we’ll take pity on your poor seafaring soul and let you in on this coastal Maine inn’s best-kept secret: a scrumptious breakfast buffet overlooking Penobscot Bay. Lobster boats cruise past, loaded down with their morning catch – soon to be your dinner – as they take their place in the peaceful harbor. Over on Lincolnville Beach, tiny toddlers with shovel and pail in hand leave their mark on the soft golden sands. And across the bay, Islesboro beckons with a full day of shopping, wine tasting and exploration on its rocky shores!

Experience an aerial tour of the Maine coast from a helicopter that departs directly from the Inn at Ocean’s Edge property.
